Waterford Castle, located 2 miles from Waterford City is uniquely situated on its own private 310 acre island on the River Suir, surrounded by woodlands and an 18 hole championship golf course. Waterford Castle offers accommodation of a superb standard and is currently the only Deluxe Hotel in the South East of Ireland.
The Castle's 19 bedrooms are bright and airy with stunning views of the surrounding estate. A ferry will take you from the water's edge across a 'channel of centuries to an age you thought now belonged only in books'. A tree-lined driveway takes you to the castle and on the way be mesmerized by the range of colors in the island's grounds. Ahead stands the Castle, proud and immense, its corners folded back in cloud-grey colored stone.
Eight hundred years have passed since Maurice Fitzgerald constructed a Norman Keep on the Island. The Island remained in the hands of the Fitzgerald family until 1958. Today it has become the site for one of the world's great hotels. The tasteful detail of the interior reflects the old world charm of a 15th century Castle. The guest rooms and suites are particularly spacious and well appointed with stunning views of the surrounding estate and golf course. Beautiful antique furniture, original oak panelling, ornate original plaster ceilings and a Elizabethan Stone fireplace complement the Castle.
Golf
A superb 18 hole Championship golf course laid out in a unique Island setting. The gentle undulating land, the stunning views from all parts of the course and the feeling of peace and seclusion engendered by a visit to the course take nothing from the quality of the challenge presented to the discerning golfer.
As course designer Des Smyth commented after he first viewed the site in 1988: "The Island has a natural undulating landscape with mature forestation and beautiful views of the river. To develop a golf course on the Island would have been a natural decision for anyone with a keen love of the game."
The many thousands of visitors to the Golf and Country Club since its opening in 1992 can attest to the success achieved by the design team and we have no doubt that you too will agree when you visit.
